Hygiene Visits at Abbey House
Your dental health is extremely important and a massive part of this is your dental hygiene.. that is why our fantastic hygiene team can help you! They can not only thoroughly clean your teeth (especially in those hard to reach areas) but more importantly they will show you how to keep your teeth and gums healthy at home in between visits. Together you, your dentist and hygienists will work as a team to keep you dentally fit, healthy and with a smile to be proud of.
Regular visits to see a hygienist will improve your gum health and reduce the risk of gum disease (the biggest reason adults lose teeth is through gum disease). If you have gum disease we can help manage it. We now know that hygiene therapy may reduce the risk of developing serious medical conditions too, research shows the links between gum disease to arthritis, heart disease, strokes and diabetes.
Your appointment with the hygienist allows plenty of time for a thorough clean and you will be given advice about the best tools and techniques to use at home. It is the most cost-effective way to look after your smile…… healthy gums = healthy you!

Bacteria form around the neck of the teeth and if left causes infection, your body will then send more blood to the area to try to fight the infection. When your toothbrush touches the gum they bleed. It can be tempting to leave areas which bleed alone but these areas need extra attention-healthy gums don’t bleed, you should always contact our team if your gums bleed and we can advise you.
There may be several reasons why your teeth are sensitive and you should ask a team member for advice as it could mean you have dental caries. For teeth which are generally sensitive we recommend a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, using warmer water when brushing and also applying it topically to particularly sensitive areas. There are also some treatments which can be recommended- just ask!.
Occasionally some areas might be sensitive but we will take things slowly and we can always use local anaesthetic to make you as comfortable as possible.
Hygienists are highly qualified and focus on the gums and bone surrounding and supporting the teeth, so you are in the best possible hands!
You can also see our hygiene team if you are not a regular attender at the practice! Just call us and we can arrange this for you, this should not replace regular examination visits with a dentist.
