Travelling with Invisalign: Tips for Staying on Track

Invisalign offers the freedom to straighten your teeth without the restrictions that often come with traditional braces. These clear, removable aligners are ideal for those who are always on the go, and many patients find them particularly suitable for busy lifestyles.

But what happens when you’re heading off on holiday, going away for work, or travelling for a special occasion?

Staying on track with your Invisalign treatment while travelling is completely possible—it just takes a little forward planning.

In this guide, we’ll explore practical tips and expert advice to help you maintain your Invisalign routine, no matter where life takes you.

Why It’s Important to Stay Consistent

Invisalign works through a series of aligners that gently shift your teeth over time. Each set is worn for around one to two weeks, depending on your treatment plan.

For the best results, you should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day. Missing days or wearing them inconsistently can delay your progress and affect the final outcome.

When you travel, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement and let routines slip. Long flights, different meal times, changes in accommodation, and simply being out of your usual rhythm can all pose challenges. But the good news is that with a few sensible habits, you can keep everything on track.

Planning Ahead Before You Go

Preparation is key. If you know you have a trip coming up, whether it’s a weekend break or a month-long adventure, it’s worth having a conversation with our team beforehand. We can give you specific advice based on where you are in your treatment.

A few things to sort before your trip include:

  • Pack extra aligners: If you’re due to switch to your next set while you’re away, take them with you. Some patients prefer to bring both their current and next set, just in case.
  • Bring your previous set: If you lose or damage your current aligners, having the last set can be a helpful backup.
  • Travel-sized cleaning kit: Pick up a small, portable cleaning case, a soft toothbrush, and aligner cleaning crystals or tablets to keep everything fresh.
  • Hard copy of your treatment plan: If you need to speak to a dentist while you’re abroad, having a printout or digital version of your plan can be very helpful.
  • Contact information for your dental practice: Just in case you need advice while you’re away, take our phone number with you.

Managing Your Invisalign on Flights and Long Journeys

Flying or travelling for extended periods can make it harder to keep to your usual routine. Here are some ways to manage Invisalign effectively while you’re in transit:

Stay hydrated

Aircraft cabins are notoriously dry. Wearing aligners for hours in a dry environment can cause your mouth to feel uncomfortable. Sip water regularly throughout the journey, and try to avoid sugary or acidic drinks unless you can remove your aligners and rinse your mouth afterwards.

Avoid eating with aligners in

It may be tempting to snack during a flight or a long drive, but remember to remove your aligners before eating. Always store them in their case to avoid accidental damage or loss.

Keep a small hygiene kit in your hand luggage

Include your aligner case, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and some floss. If brushing after a meal isn’t possible, at least rinse your mouth and your aligners with water until you can brush properly.

Be cautious with time zone changes

If you’re switching aligners while abroad, try to stay close to your usual switching schedule. A change of a few hours won’t make a big difference, but consistency is still important.

Eating and Drinking While Travelling

One of Invisalign’s biggest benefits is that you can remove the aligners when eating and drinking. However, when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings or trying new foods, it’s easy to forget the routine. Here’s how to stay on track.

Stick to your 20–22 hour wear time

It’s easy to let things slip when you’re enjoying yourself on holiday, but those hours add up. Try not to leave your aligners out for too long after meals or snacks.

Carry your aligner case with you at all times

Never wrap them in a napkin or leave them loose; they can easily be thrown away by mistake or pick up bacteria. Keeping the case with you makes it easier to follow your routine, wherever you are.

Brush before putting your aligners back in

Food particles can get trapped under the aligners, which can lead to bad breath, staining, or even tooth decay if left unchecked. If brushing isn’t practical, at least rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush when you can.

Watch out for staining foods and drinks

Red wine, curry, coffee, and certain fruits can stain your aligners if consumed while wearing them. Always remove them before indulging, and brush or rinse before putting them back in.

Keeping Your Aligners Clean on the Move

Maintaining your oral hygiene while travelling is essential, not just for your aligners, but for your overall dental health too. Clean aligners are more comfortable, clearer, and less likely to cause odour.

Here are a few practical ways to keep your aligners clean:

  • Brush your aligners gently every morning and evening using a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water.
  • Use cleaning tablets or crystals every few days to remove any buildup.
  • Avoid using toothpaste on the aligners, as it can be abrasive and cause tiny scratches.
  • Don’t soak them in mouthwash, especially if it contains alcohol or colouring, as this can damage or stain the plastic.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

Even with the best preparation, things don’t always go to plan. Whether you lose an aligner, damage one, or forget a key part of your kit, there are steps you can take to manage the situation.

Lost or broken aligner

If you lose your current set and don’t have a spare, go back to your previous set if you’ve brought it with you. This will help maintain your progress until you can speak with your dentist.

Can’t clean your aligners properly

If you’re unable to brush your aligners for a day or two, rinse them regularly with water and keep them as clean as possible until you can get back to your routine.

Feeling discomfort while away

Slight discomfort when switching aligners is normal, but if you experience unusual pain, swelling, or sensitivity, contact us. We’ll provide advice over the phone.

Missed your aligner switch date

If you forget to change to your next set on the correct date, don’t panic. Just switch as soon as you remember, and adjust your calendar accordingly. Small delays won’t derail the whole process, but try not to let them become a habit.

Making Invisalign Fit Around Your Travel Plans

With some thought and commitment, Invisalign can fit into virtually any lifestyle. Whether you’re hiking in the Lakes, sunbathing in Spain, or attending a business event in London, your treatment doesn’t have to stop. The key is to keep up your routine and treat your aligners as part of your everyday essentials.

Many patients find that once they’ve travelled with Invisalign once, it becomes second nature. It’s simply a matter of creating small habits that support your treatment goals, wherever you are in the world.

Travelling with Invisalign doesn’t need to be stressful. With the right preparation and mindset, you can enjoy your time away without compromising your progress. Keeping your aligners clean, sticking to the recommended wear time, and planning ahead will make a big difference to your outcome.
